Garbage and Recycling
Service Providers
The City of Alton provides Residential garbage and recycling services for the community. The city contracts with Orange City Sanitation for Residential garbage and recycling pick-up.
The City of Alton does not provide garbage and recycling for commercial properties. Commercial properties need to contract with their own sanitation company.

Residential Garbage
Residential Garbage collection occurs every Monday.

Recycling
Recycling collection occurs on the second and fourth Wednesday. If there are five Wednesdays in a month, no recycling is picked up the fifth Wednesday. View acceptable recyclable materials.

Yard Waste
No yard waste is allowed in garbage or recycling containers. The City of Alton has a disposal site for residents to dispose of yard waste. The site is located at 1100 East 8th Avenue, which is north of the athletic field. There is no charge for this service. This is a self-delivery disposal site and provides an area for vegetative waste and an area designated for tree disposal. Signs are posted to show where vegetative waste must be disposed of, and where branches must be disposed of. Building lumber, Garbage, and Concrete disposal are NOT allowed.

Spring Cleanup Event
The City of Alton and Orange City Sanitation sponsor Alton’s Annual Spring Clean-Up Day scheduled each spring. Please see the Alton newsletter for date and time.
Alton residents must purchase a $15 lawn flag (one for each household), at the Alton City Office or from Orange City Sanitation. Crews will only remove items that have a special lawn flag displayed nearby.
Allowable Items:
- garage and home items,
- furniture/wood items,
- mattresses/carpets.
Non-Allowable Items:
- all appliances/white goods,
- building-remodeling materials,
- wood chips,
- auto parts (tires, batteries, etc.),
- concrete,
- steel/iron,
- yard waste,
- tree branches,
- oil,
- yard chemicals
- wet paints.
Special pickup arrangements may be made available from OC Sanitation (737-2645).
E-Recycling Event
The Cities of Alton and Orange City co-sponsor and paying for a FREE TO RESIDENTS (sorry no businesses) recycling program each spring and fall, which will accept computer monitors, CPU’s, keyboards and mouse(s), laptops, printers, servers, cell phones, TV’s, small batteries, sound equipment, banking equipment, VCR’s, fax machines, and AC adapters. Sorry, car batteries and light bulbs are not allowed. Items can be dropped off at the Alton City Hall in the spring and Orange City, City Street Department south of Ace Hardware on Highway 10 in the fall. Residents must pick up a sticker (one per household), at the Orange City or Alton City Offices. This sticker must be presented at the time of drop off. NO EARLY DROP OFFS will be allowed.
Household Hazardous Materials
Household hazardous materials (HHM) are corrosive, flammable, toxic, or reactive. Any products that have labels with DANGER, WARNING, or CAUTION may also be HHM.
Every year, Orange City and Alton join with Northwest Iowa Area Landfill to sponsor a household hazardous material recycling. This annual event is held in Orange City every year.

- Waxes and polishes
- Solvents
- Lacquers and thinners
- Caustic household cleaners
- Spot & stain removers
- Pesticides & herbicides
- Oil based paint.
- Latex paint*
*Unusable latex paint received will be charged a $1/gal fee. Unusable latex paint is of poor quality and cannot be reused. Completely dried latex can be disposed of with your regular garbage. Mixing it with cat litter, sawdust, or wood chips will help to dry out latex paint.

- Empty containers
- Radioactive materials
- Fire extinguishers.
- Compressed gas cylinders
- Pharmaceuticals
HHM Advice
- Always follow the product’s use, storage, and disposal label directions.
- Never store HHM in food containers.
- Make sure lids are tight and secure on all stored HHM.
- Buy only as many products as you think you will need.
- Try to use it all for its intended purpose.
- Always use labels!
Northwest Iowa Area Landfill
The Northwest Iowa Area Landfill Agency consists of all the incorporated and unincorporated communities within Lyon, Osceola, Sioux, O’Brien, and Clay counties. In cooperation with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, they have established this facility to provide residents with local disposal of household hazardous materials.
This service is free for all residents within the service area. However, user fees may be assessed for small quantity generators. Call 712-324-4026 to determine if your business would be categorized as a small quantity generator.
