Responsibilities
- The Street Department is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the community’s 17.5 miles of streets. Specific duties include:
- Cleaning and sweeping streets.
- Grading alleys
- Maintaining and replacing street signs
- Managing overlaying and repaving of deteriorated streets.
- Painting curbs and parking areas.
- Removing snow.
- Repairing potholes and deteriorated pavement.
- Sealing cracks.

How can I get some of my sidewalk replaced? The City of Alton provides a sidewalk replacement program in which the City of Alton helps with the cost of restoring deteriorated sidewalks. This program is designed to be used as a financial incentive for Alton property owners to replace broken, dangerous, or missing sidewalks with a portion of the costs being incurred by the City of Alton.
